The book, "Echo" by Pam Munoz, takes place in many different places and timelines. One of these places being Trossingen, Germany. This is the town that friedrich and his family live in. It's described as a sort of poorer town than other towns, and has a lot of smoke and factories, as its states in chapter 1, "From his vantage, he looked across the rooftops of Trossingen toward the castle-like factory looming about the town. Within its walls, a smokestack rose higher than the tallest gable and puffed a white cloud, a beacon against the grey sky." From this quote, we can tell that the area in general is polluted, and the towns people wouldn't generally like it.

There are many different branching characters and story lines in the book "Echo" by Pam Munoz . One character, Friedrich, is the main protagonist of the first section of the book. He is portrayed as wimpy but wants to be greater. A quote from the book in chapter one states, "In a town between the black forest and the Swabian Alps, Friedrich Schmidt stood on the threshold of his half-timbered house, pretending to be brave.” This quote shows that Fredrich doesn’t have a high standard for himself, as it seems like he thinks he isn’t that brave. Another main character, his father, also wants the best for his son, as it states in this quote from chapter 1, “His father stood behind him in the doorway. ‘Son, you know the way. We’ve walked it hundreds of times. Remember, you have as much right to be on the street as the next person.’” From this quote, we can infer that his father wants the best for his son, but he acts like there's something horribly wrong, and to keep a positive state of mind. Both of these characters seem like they actually have something to live for, and aren’t placed into the story to force it to continue.
